The Daring Book for Girls

Parent Bloggers NetworkA while back, The Parent Bloggers Network reviewed the Dangerous Book for Boys by Conn and Hal Iggulden. Being the mother of two sons I wanted to review it. Unfortunately, so did a lot of other bloggers. When The Parent Bloggers Network was looking for people to review the Daring Book for Girls by Andrea J. Buchanan and Miriam Peskowitz, I immediately said I would do it.

Even though I don't have daughters, I wanted to review it for two reasons 1) As a feminist, I'm always a little skeptical when products are marketed exclusively for boys or girls 2)Hey, I was a girl once and I was curious about what the book was all about it.

The book cover itself is pretty impressive. It's a pretty blue color, and the title is in silver sparkly material. While I appreciated that not only wasn't it in pink but it was instead in the stereotypical boy color of blue, I wondered if the sparkly image meant that the whole book would be about how to do manicures. I hoped not, and I was pleasantly surprised.

There are tons of sections on stuff that I would consider "neat" and stuff that I would consider "important" . Just to give you a few examples, there's are sections on the periodic table, math tricks (from which I learned something new!), folding a sari, negotiating a salary, giving a presentation, and something I wished I had learned about at a much younger age Robert's Rules. There are also sections on basketball, baseball and how to tie knots. Hmmm...great for pacifying a concerned feminist, but what about the more girly girls? This is after all a book marketed for girls. There are sections on friendship bracelets, slumber party games, and the intriguing guide to putting your hair up with a pencil.

I was pretty impressed by this book. It was exactly what a thorough guide for fun things for kids book should be in that there really is something for everyone. Just in case you're wondering, there are a lot of things for boys to learn about and do as well. In addition to enjoying the content, I was also impressed by the paper quality and the illustrations. You are definitely getting your money's worth.
