Four Eyes Are Better Than Two

Today we had the follow up eye doctor appointment for my younger son (YS). As a kid I had strabismus. Because it can be genetic, my kids have to be screened on a regular schedule. OS has always passed with flying colors. I had noticed what looked like the beginnings of strabismus with YS so the eye doctor had me bring him back after giving him pupil dilation drops at home.

In a nutshell, YS is borderline. That being said, the eye doctor felt that the only reason I could see the strabismus on YS was because I had it myself as a kid. People who have it/had it are extra sensitive to it in other people. Another parent with a child like YS probably wouldn't have seen it. 50% of the kids who have it at the level that YS has it and at his age will outgrow it. He recommended waiting another 6 months and then doing a follow up check to give his eyes a chance to self correct or at least see if they stay the same.

As often as I heard the phrase "four eyes are better than two" growing up, I don't believe it. Particularly when it applies to a 3 year old. Particularly when 3 year olds tend to lose things...and break things...and refuse to wear things.

A. Elliot's Lesson Learned: Two eyes are the best option.
