Lying to Children

I always thought it was wrong to lie to kids. The key word is "thought" not "think". After all remember the whole chant "liar liar pants on fire"?

While I do try to always tell the kids the truth, or at least age appropriate truths, there have been times where I have to weigh morals vs. hurting feelings, pain vs. truth, truth vs. going insane from having to listen to a temper tantrum.

This leads me to my latest lie I've been telling my older son, of course said with as much energy and enthusiasm as if I were cheering him on in the Olympics.

Me: What could be a more special way to celebrate your 6th birthday than your very first day of kindergarten?!

OS: What about Davis Farmland?

Me: Sure every year we've gone to Davis Farmland to celebrate your birthday, but this year your birthday will be extra special because you will have not only your first day of kindergarten but your first bus ride!!!

I have to say, my lie actually seems to be working! Now of course I have to come up with another lie due to another letter from the school in the mail. Why spend all summer playing outside when you could spend part of it reading your assigned kindergarten reading?!!! How cool is that?!!! I bet your younger brother wishes he were big enough to have a fun school reading?!!!

I have a feeling that one isn't going to go over as well. I may need to tweak that lie. Seriously, though when did kindergarten stop becoming about tying shoes and raising your hand to go to the bathroom? The principal said that today's kindergarten is what our first grade was. Off to work on my lying.

A. Elliot's Lesson Learned: Given the choice between a major meltdown and lie, sometimes it's best to choose the latter. Look at it as exercising your creative side.

Seriously, work on the shoe tying. It sucks having older kids who can't tie them very well...

That's funny, my son's first day of Kindergarten is on his birthday too.

When the Bush administration decided that developmentally inappropriate education practices were the best way to burn kids out early, so they would fail tests, so the federal government could cut aid to schools, so we could go back to a system in which only the rich have access to quality education. Bah!
