The Free Water Bottle

When the alarm went off before 5 am this morning, I briefly contemplated turning it off. Then I remembered the alarming amount of food I consumed this past week in Chicago, particularly at the funeral home. This image was enough to jolt me wide awake. Sweet dreams are of course wonderful, but loaded into my biking shorts with cake, Polish sausage, and pizza would be a real life nightmare. Alright, I'm exaggerating, but I needed to get back to my own gym.

I arrived at the gym in my usual super sexy state: tight clothes and wind swept hair my fleece coat over my spinning clothes with an ugly pair of gray sweatpants. As usual I hadn't brushed my hair. Also, as usual, I said hello to the man who always staffs the front desk at the crack of dawn on weekdays. Unusually, I wasn't carrying my blue water bottle. Why not? Well because no one knows where it is. Or at least no one is telling.

I actually believe that my younger son (YS) knows the whereabouts of the blue water bottle. He thinks he is the master of the bottle, and he is always trying to get a hold of it. Since it sits in the water bottle basket on a bike where countless people including me sweat and, based on my observation, a bike that a far smaller number of people properly clean, the water bottle is probably as sterile after a workout as...oh let's say the floor of the bus station bathroom. I swear YS knows this, and it makes him want it even more! Before any of you freak out, I do rinse and thoroughly dry off the water bottle before bringing it home. Also, as the daughter of an ER doctor, it takes a lot to freak me out about germs, so no I'm not really worried that he's going to get the plague, but I still don't like him playing with it.

I asked the man at the Y if anyone had turned a blue water bottle in to the lost and found. After looking around, he came back and said that it wasn't there, but he was holding a small red YMCA water bottle (a nice one too) that he offered to let me use. He assured me that it was clean and had never been used. I was very thrown my this generous gesture and too tired to spend a lot of time thinking about it. It did occur to me that I had no way of knowing that it really was clean or that it hadn't come from the Lost and Found, but decided not to dwell on it. I then wondered if he had given me the bottle or merely loaned it to me, and if he had loaned it to whom he might have previously loaned it. On the way out I asked him if he wanted the water bottle back. He told me that it was mine to keep.

That free water bottle really was a good start to my day. Of course you know who was very intrigued by this new transparent red water bottle?

A. Elliot's Lesson Learned: It's funny how something so small can really make your day (but not so funny when something small ruins your whole day).

Q likes to run off with SwingDaddy's waterbottles when he returns from bike rides. We always have to grab them back to wipe them down. Then Q takes a swig and asks, "who's bottle is this?" and we reply, "well, it's yours now."

MJ always steals the water bottle I take with me to Kung Fu. Don't know what's so exciting about it, but when she finds it all other toys are demoted and the bottle goes clump clump clumping around the house with her every step.

I should get a real water bottle some day. Instead, I just refill a regular Poland Spring plastic bottle until it becomes utterly repulsive and/or I accidentally crush it. I'm sure YS would love it.

You have a good attitude about germs. People are too nutty about that.

Sorry to be MIA. Just getting better and am now home with a sick kid. So now I've got time to catch up.

I got a little grossed out thinking about the water bottle and all the germs on the bikes. I'm not usually germ-o-phobic, but yech.

What is with kids and preferring to play with things that aren't really toys?

When my ds was young he loved playing with anything water, and anything that held water, but would shriek and run in the opposite direction if the word "bath" was mentioned. Go figure. Hope you can hold on to this one!

You're a better woman than I am, getting up so early to go and spin! I'd loan you some of our bottles, we only have about 20 or so. Having two sons in sports we seem to collect them, or they reproduce in the cabinet, not sure. :) I'm a believer that germs are good for you (well, some are) it's the only way our bodies build up immunity. All that anti-bacterial stuff drives me crazy!
