Body Image

Writing yesterday's post reminded me of a post that I meant to do a while back and forgot. It's about my experience at the Y I went into Chicago.

The Y I belong to in Massachusetts has three different locker rooms for females. There's the family locker room, the girls locker room and the women's locker room. To use the women's locker room you have to be at least 18. Needless to say, unless I'm there with my older son for swim lessons and thus have to use the family locker room, I use the women's locker room.

The women's locker room is actually pretty nice. For the most part it is clean and I think for a Y it is incredibly spacious. The Y itself isn't that old. There are several changing stalls in the women's locker room. They are almost always occupied. Perhaps because I spent so many years doing competitive swimming and thus spent quite a bit of time changing in a locker room, I'm pretty comfortable in the locker room. I have a "system" where I arrange my clothes a certain way in the locker, and I can get dressed in about the time it would take me to move all my things into a changing stall. Plus, I really don't care. One time right before I gave birth to my second son, I felt eyes on me. I turned to see a teenage girl staring at my bared belly. Was I disturbed? Not at all. Sometimes I would catch a glimpse of my bare belly in the mirror at home and also stare in amazement that my belly was so large.

The Y in Chicago was completely different. I used it four times. The changing stalls were empty every time. Furthermore, women were walking around in the buff without any apparent self-consciousness. These women were all different shapes and sizes. I was pretty impressed by how comfortable they were with their bodies.

That's interesting that it's different in different parts of the country.

We have a women's, girl's, family, men's, and boy's locker rooms at our Y. The most annoying part for me is knowing that the me have a hot tub in their locker room and the women don't!

I wonder what caused that difference? Also, I'm glad that girl stared at you. Maybe it would help her realize that there's plenty of time for sex... later. ;-) While I think pregnant women are beautiful, I would imagine from a teen's perspective it would be overwhelming.

    Aaahhh! Attack of the Puritans!

We learn shame from a very early age around these parts. Personally I couldn't care less who is staring at my white butt when i'm changing in a locker room but I'm the exception here in Mass.

It's funny isn't it, how different people are about modesty? Some people just let it all hang out, while others wait in line to change in the toilet stall. I guess it does have alot to do with your own body image and perhaps how you were raised.

    Interesting post!

I'm kind of in between. I'm not quite a bathroom changer but I do try and dress quickly so as not to have my jiggly parts hanging out for all the see.

When I first started going to the gym I was nervous about changing. Then I realized how many different body types passed through that changing room and it actually made me more confident and motivated.

The gym I went to for awhile where I live now was always filled with skinny women wearing actual exercise gear - not baggy t-shirts and yoga pants like me. It make me not want to go.

It is amazing the effect that a comfortable place to exercise can have.
