Get the Lead Out!

I'm sure that like you me, you've seen numerous posts all over the blogosphere about outrage over lead in the paint of toys.  With the holidays coming up, this obviously is a big concern.  Who doesn't want their kids to be safe?  My older son hardly ever put anything in his mouth, but my younger son has gone to the opposite extreme and doesn't seem to think a toy is worthy of being played with until he he has taste tasted it 3 or 4 dozen times.   I have to say that when I found out about Aqua Dots been coated  with a date rape drug, I really did have to catch my breath because I almost bought them the week before the story came out for my older son.  As parents, we can make the decision of what toys to buy our kids.  We can decide that we are going to boycott certain toys.  Of course this is hard because just because we think a toy is safe, doesn't really mean it is.  It could just be that it hasn't been recalled yet.  Perhaps that sounded way to pessimist.

This Friday, November 23rd at 9:45 am, Consumers Union (CU) with the support of  MASSPIRG and Clean Water Action will be sponsoring a consumer awareness event at the Park Street T-Station (on the corner of Tremont and Park).   CU paired up Parent Bloggers Network to sponsor Twelve Days of Safe Shopping to support consumers in making informed decisions about the toys that they buy.  They put together a retailers demands coupon book as well as stickers and additional information about the effort.  This Friday, there will be a CU staff person and volunteers handing out retailers coupon books and helping to get out more information about lead in toys.
