Marching One by One Part II

A couple days ago, I gathered the boys in the car to go run an errand, specifically to borow the business casual clothing I wore on TV from a friend. My older son (OS) was chattering away as I began driving down the street. At first I wasn't paying too much attention. After all, he wasn't talking to me, and I was focused on escaping my driveway without having a close encounter with any of the teenagers who have confused my street with a speedway. I therefore assumed he was talking to his younger brother. When I realized that was not the case, I became concerned.

AE: OS, who are you talking to?
OS: The ant.
AE: What ant?!
OS: The ant in my hand. I'm petting it.
AE (mentally picturing OS's imaginary chinchilla, imaginary spider and imaginary baby): Is this a real ant or a pretend ant?
OS (proudly): It's a real ant, Mommy.

I quickly pulled over the car and got out to investigate. Lo and behold, OS was holding a big black ant in one hand while trying to pet it with the other hand. The ant did not seem too impressed to say the least. Neither was I. I put the ant on the sidewalk despite OS's many howls and protests that the ant was his new pet.

For those of you who have been with this blog from the beginning, the good news is that the ant was not from my former ant farm.

A. Elliot's Lesson Learned: If a child is talking to someone other than his toys, his brother, his imaginary chincilla, and you, then there must be someone else in the car.
