When I was about 5 months pregnant with my older son (OS), I bit into a piece of Easter chocolate that I had put in the fridge to keep from melting. I managed to pull off the permanent retainer that was cemented to my top teeth. It was really painful - literally for my teeth and figuratively in my neck to try to get it fixed. (I ended up getting a removable retainer.) After that I've always tried to remember to use a knife to cut up large pieces of chocolate because I still have a permanent retainer on my bottom teeth.
I should really say "had". As mentioned in my post yesterday, Aunt Flo has made her monthly visit to my house. I had such a bad craving for chocolate last night. I've been doing really well with my weight loss, but I have promised myself that if I'm ever craving something really badly that I'll just get it; otherwise I'll end up eating a ton of yogurt and granola bars and still getting the chocolate or other craved item later. The boys had eaten everything the Big Giraffe cooked for all of us while I was meeting with the personal trainer, so the Big Giraffe encouraged me to just pick something up on the way home. I used this an excuse to stop at Trader Joe's and get some lemon curry chicken soup (fantastic) and a chunk of chocolate (also fantastic). I enjoyed my first bite of the chocolate after I finished the soup ,and it was delicious. I then took another big bite out of the chunk of chocolate and felt a horrible, sharp pain and something hard crumbling in my mouth. At first I thought I broke my tooth. Fortunately it turns out that it was a retainer accident. I ripped the permanent retainer off of one of my bottom front teeth.
It definitely felt weird; like I had bumped my tooth hard. I was hoping that it would feel better in the morning. However, not only was there a ton of pressure this morning, but I've started to develop a bit of a snaggle tooth. I called the emergency orthodontist line of my orthodontist. (Alright calling him my orthodontist may be a stretch. It is technically the Big Giraffe's orthodontist from when he had braces a few years ago. I did use him the last time this happened.)
The orthodontist has a new partner who was great. She opened up her office for me and partially removed my retainer. She would have removed the whole thing, but due to the speed with which my freed tooth has been "snaggling," she was worried that other teeth would join the rebellion if she removed the whole thing without immediately fitting me for a retainer. I'm going to go in this week and have the rest of the retainer pulled off and get a new removable retainer.
A. Elliot's Lesson Learned: Don't eat large blocks of solid chocolate if you have a permanent retainer in your mouth...particularly immediately after meeting with a personal trainer, or you will be fighting karma and the laws of physics! Labels: Food (Solid), Mom-Care |
I didn't know you had permanent retainers. You learn something new every day.
As for its breakage, man, that sucks.
