Three Kids? Try Plan Bee

Today I babysat for the babysitting cult...I mean co-op. In reality, the little girl I watched was terrific. In addition, one of my friends and her sons came over for a playdate (with the little girl's mom's approval of course) which was also a lot of fun. Since Tina just had a baby a couple months ago, I had hoped to make her a nice lunch so that she could just relax. The first part of that plan wasn't very successful because Tina is that great type of person who always pitches in even though I repeatedly told her that I had everything under control. Maybe her own observations of me watching 3 kids, one of whom (my older son) was having constant meltdowns gave her a different impression. I can't imagine why! (No Big Giraffe, that doesn't prove we can't handle 3 kids.)

Whether or not the help was needed, it certainly meant that Tina and my lunch was ready faster. Of course the kids had finished eating about five minutes before that, since we couldn't sit down until food was cut up, seconds was dished out, etc. Since we were eating out on the deck, however, I decided to take advantage of the more extensive options available to keep the kids entertained (or at least OS, Tina's older son, and the little girl for whom I was watching), ensuring a peaceful lunch for Tina and me. I opened the kids' sand table. We haven't used the sand table in the month since we got our sandbox. I knew that the poor sand table had been terribly neglected, but I didn't know how bad it was. I took off the cover, and the kids began playing. OS quickly lost interest and Tina's son decided it was better to play inside. I heard the little girl say something about a pretty bee. Tina and I looked over and there was a beehive in the sandbox table. This may be the time to mention that I have really bad reactions to bees, or at least bee stings. And yes, I did have our deck sprayed about 6 weeks ago. We calmly got the kids in the house, and I put the lid back on the table. Tina insisted on clearing the table and bringing everything inside, since she wasn't the one who may need an ambulance called if she got stung. So much for a relaxing lunch! I called the pest control people as soon as the kids were napping. They're supposed to call me back. I still haven't heard.

On a side note, I had the great (by which I mean idiotic) idea to let the kids paint outside this afternoon. OS and the little girl did great. What I didn't foresee, was that my younger son (YS) would also desperately want to paint when he realized what the big kids were up to. (After all, it's not like he doesn't demand the chance to do everything else that his older brother does.) I seriously hope that washable paint isn't too toxic.

A. Elliot's Lesson Learned: Having a third kid around the house definitely generates some buzz.

ACK. I am now bee paranoid as in the last few years in AZ the africanized bees have taken over. You just can't be too careful with those, allergic reactions or no. They are dangerous critters. I still get jumpy here when I see a bee and have to remind myself that seeing one does not necessarily signal danger (no allergies for me, thankfully).
Sorry your lunch got intense. Did the pest control people ever make it out?
