I have to confess that before I came to BlogHer, I was picturing this conference to be like a Star Trek convention. The Big Giraffe kept on insisting, after initially being insulted because he loves Star Trek, that it would only be like that in that there would be a whole bunch of people who love blogs. No one would be walking around dressed up like a computer. I wasn't entirely convinced.
I have to admit that I was pretty nervous when I arrived. Thursday night there was an informal gathering at the W. Suzanne and I headed over to it and met up with SJ from I, Asshole. We went up to the gathering and then pretty much turned around and left. It was just way too crowded, hot, loud and dark. We ended up meeting some other bloggers for dinner/drinks. I had a great time and began to finally start relaxing.
Our "roomies" Super Des and Count Mockula finally got in after huge delays. We stayed up way too late discussing Harry Potter and search words for Suzanne's blog. Seeing as her blog is called Campaign for Unshaved Snatch and Other Rants, well I'll just leave that up to your imagination.
Yesterday we headed over to the conference around 8 am. There definitely was a ton of excitement in the air. It reminded me of my high school reunion. You know how you know you know someone, but you're not sure what they will look like because it's been 10 years? Pretty much the same thing here. You know you know the bloggers because your read their blogs and maybe email with them, but you're not quite sure what they look like because all you've seen is their picture. Then there's always those inconsiderate bloggers who have the audacity to have the picture on their profile be a drawing instead of an actual photo. What's wrong with them?!
Everyone has a badge with their url and sometimes their name on it (they said that 60% of bloggers here blog anonymously so their names weren't put on the badges), but the type is really small. I feel like I've spent a lot of time trying to tastefully read a badge that is pinned to someone's chest while not looking weird. I got to meet Suebob and have the honor of having my picture taken with her red stapler!
I went to a talk on self-branding and then one of how to drive traffic to your blog. That one was really good. I'll share the tips when I get back home. I also went to one on mommy bloggers. That one was particularly interesting because even though I'm a mommy and a blogger, I guess I've never really identified myself as a "mommy blogger". That is a post in and of itself though (pause here as I stop to listen to someone who is talking on the mike about blogging about having an orgasm on a treadmill. I'm typing this as I'm "listening" to a panel about robots and humans).
I could just go on and on about all the fabulous people I've met like my blog old exchange partners Kari and Lady M who are just great, and One Weird Mother who I've just really enjoyed talking to as well as Fishy Girl . I will definitely be updating my blog roll in the next couple of days.
A. Elliot's Lesson Learned: While there may be some weird people here (myself included), BlogHer is definitely not like a Star Trek Convention . Labels: Humor (at least Attempted) |
The orgasm on a treadmill bit was priceless.
