Playdate at the Mall

Today was one of those days when I realized that we had absolutely nothing planned. Normally we have playgroup on Wednesday, but today was a busy day for everyone except us, so for the first time in what seems like forever, playgroup was canceled. Although I should have taken the day to do some of the more exciting things in life like cleaning my house and doing laundry, I didn't want too much excitement to go to my head so I called a friend of mine to see what she and her daughter were doing. She needed to run an errand at a mall that's about 40 minutes from my house. The boys and I met them there, and the kids had a fantastic time running around in the play space. After lunch and more time in the play space, we let them play with the toys at Pottery Barn Kids. Of course I was annoyed to discover that they changed their kitchen line from white to pink; just one more piece of stereo-typing in kids toys. OS was quite taken with the mixer and the toaster. YS enjoyed playing with the wooden refrigerator. Afterwards we went home for an uneventful afternoon. Sometimes those are just the best days. I had a great time talking with my friend, and the kids had a wonderful time playing together.

A. Elliot's Lesson Learned: An unstructured outing on a day with nothing scheduled can be one of the best ways to spend time.

I agree. Most days are quite unstructured around here and we're quite happy ;)
(Although I will confess that I am sometimes jealous of how organized and "structured" your time with your kids seems to be. I just don't know how you do it!)

I couldn't agree more that unstructured days are some of the best.

Spontaneity rocks. Just like when you showed up at the picnic last weekend!
