The Big Day Part I: My Brother-in-Law's Wedding

Saturday was the big day. The Big Giraffe (BG) and I decided that our best bet for good behavior from the boys (and possibly us too!) was to tire the boys out so that they would hopefully take a nap. After breakfast including more tasty hashbrowns with Grammy, we took them to a nearby park so they could run around. We tossed a Frisbee (which was a replacement for the lost ball) and blew bubbles too. Of course we also had to play the game. OS decided he wanted to ride on the big boy swings and have my husband push him. I'm not sure if he had been on them at preschool, but he definitely refused to ride them when we've suggested it before, and I have to admit I was pleased but surprised.

OS was doing fine until he decided to let go of the swing to fix his loose Croc. Of course he proceeded to fall flat on the side of his face and right on his belly while he was up high. Visions of the ER flashed through my mind (Note to Big Giraffe's Little Brother: aren't you glad you're finding out about this sometime down the road after your honeymoon is over, instead of on Saturday just before the wedding :) ) Luckily after a few minutes of hysterical crying, he was fine. After what seemed like 30 minutes, my heart stopped racing!

Not surprisingly, because we wanted this plan to work so badly, it did not. Well, not for OS anyhow. After much protesting, much complaining, and some shrieking OS put on his tuxedo (or BG put it on him). Then he went to "hang out" with the guys while YS and I had some rare mommy-son time together. I got a frantic voice mail on my cell phone from the BG that OS still hadn't calmed down and I needed to get there immediately. However, by the time my MIL (who I was driving), YS and I got over there, OS was fine.

The wedding itself was beautiful, as was my sister-in-law and her dress. It was an outdoor wedding. The ceremony was held in a covered pavilion. YS looked so darn cute in his sailor suit with his bare feet. We sat in an assigned seat at the back with my new sister-in-law's brother and sister-in-law and their children. YS enjoyed crawling around. Fortunately, my MIL's cousin Beth sat with me and took care of YS so I was able to fully devote myself to OS. So did OS go down the aisle? I will leave you in suspense. That deserves a post in and of itself.

After the ceremony we had a cocktail hour outside where I finally got to have a mint julep...or umm...two. The adult dinner was great, although I didn't spend quite as much time with the Big Giraffe as initially hoped, since he was hopping around on best man tasks. The kids enjoyed their chicken nuggets and especially the cake. Afterwards, we went back outside for more dancing..and possibly more mint juleps. The Big Giraffe's aunt Linda, Beth and her husband Leonard were so much fun. We all took turns dancing together. Then the Electric Slide came on. Beth and Leonard bolted onto the dance floor and really shone. When I asked them later how they knew the dance, they said between their kids' weddings and their friends' kids' weddings, they had learned how to do it and just loved it. Later when a rap cha cha dance came on, they were the first out there and quite excited to learn a new dance. As for me? While I had a fantastic time, the next time the Big Giraffe is in a wedding party, I'm going to bring my own date!

A. Elliot's Lesson Learned: Save the first experiences with new playground equipment for a day when your child and husband are not in a wedding party or other major event.
