First of all, I would like to point out the following button:

I'm so excited to be going with Suzanne and Super Des. I registered today.
Now onto parenting rambles. Yesterday I made an old recipe that's been in our family for generations: Kashmir Pulaski Surprise. This is made from only the finest ingredients. Okay, it really is a recipe that was created by one of my relatives to celebrate Kashmir Pulaski day last month (my mom's side is Polish) and it's made from those party Polish sausages, sauerkraut, mashed potatoes and chicken broth. (On a side note, it cracks me up that here in MA Patriot's Day is a huge deal, but no one has heard of Kashmir Pulaski Day and yet in Chicago, the schools get Kashmir Pulaski Day off, but Patriot's Day isn't a big deal.) It's quite tasty! I was very excited to sit down to dinner. I gave my younger son (YS) some of the "surprise" and much to my surprise YS gulped down sauerkraut and mashed potatoes. He liked the Polish sausages too, but he really liked the sauerkraut/mashed potato mixture.
My older son (OS) however had a different opinion. Let's just say that we had to have more than one conversation where I explained that no, he could not take the Polish sausages to the kitchen sink to wash them off with soap and water (using a napkin was acceptable though). In our house, no one has to eat anything they do not want to eat. On the other hand, OS can't decide to have something else for dinner. BUT, I try to be respectful of their likes and dislikes, and I always make sure that there's at least one thing in the meal that they like (so with this it was Polish sausage, mashed potatoes and grapes). Again, no one has to eat anything that they don't want to eat. That's why I was so surprised to see OS trying to be slick and handing the dog forkfuls of sauerkraut and mashed potatoes under the table. The last thing the dog needs is sauerkraut. Guess whose room he was farting in all night?
Lo and behold, tonight OS was very excited to eat the sauerkraut; with chopsticks of course. Go figure.
A. Elliot's Lesson Learned: Even Polish food tastes better with chopsticks.
