Today after talking with a friend, I reflected (that sounds so serious!) on when my older son (OS) used to eat baby food. OS loved his baby food. He just couldn't get enough of the pureed fruits and vegetables. His pediatrician encouraged it; a vegetable is a vegetable whether it's mixed with water or not. She told me to keep on giving it to him for as long as he would eat it. While some of our friends were struggling to get their children, who were OS's age, to eat veggies, I didn't see any reason not to feed him babyfood. One day when OS was around 11 months old, I was unloading a bunch of baby food on the conveyor belt at the grocery store. This guy behind me asked me how old my baby was. When I told him OS's age (he was at home) the guy looked shocked. He replied that his daughter was finished with baby food at the end of 6 months. I in turn was shocked that his daughter wouldn't eat them.
Let me just clarify by saying that we did give OS regular fruits and veggies. He just preferred the babyfood ones. I think he finally gave them up around 20 months. I was so pleased and felt like such the competent mother about giving babies babyfood fruits and veggies that it never occurred to me that I wouldn't continue giving my younger son (YS) babyfood fruit and veggies through 20 months as well. This was my second go at raising a baby, and I knew what I was doing. Then it turned into at least 15 months, at least a year, at least 9 months and then recently until we returned back from our trip to Chicago. He just doesn't like them, but he does a fantastic job eating regular cooked veggies and eating fruit. I did slip in a jar of squash at lunch, but he wasn't too thrilled about it. If it's working for him, then I guess it's working for me too. I'm still holding off on peanut butter until he is 15 months or whatever new age the doctor tells me. We knew for a while that he was okay with eggs because he didn't react to his flu shot which is grown in an egg.
When I wrote my post about the American Girl Place, I should have said that two of us really enjoyed the cranberry quiche. I was one. Can you guess who the other one was?Labels: Child Health and Personal Care, Food (Solid) |
It's good that your kids like their veggies. Hopefully they don't get burned out and grow up despising them (not that I'm saying you're overdoing it).
