Note: I actually wrote this post a few weeks ago. Just as I was finished writing it, I realized that I didn't see any mention of DHA and ARA on the formula can or on-line. I emailed Earth's Best and didn't hear back from them. Today after almost being killed by my possessed treadmill while my kids had "quiet time", (more on that later) I took a break and decided to actually call Earth's Best. The woman told me that at this time DHA and ARA are NOT in their formula. She said they had hope to have it added by early 2007, but obviously that did not happen. So the big difference between Organic Similiac and Earth's Best formula is that Organic Similiac has DHA and ARA while Earth's Best does not. If you are interested in using Earth's Best but want the DHA and ARA, I would advise you to just keep an eye out at the store and/or check their website because they are planning on adding it.
We knew that it would come. We knew that some day we would have to face our fears. I'm sure you're thinking I'm talking about jumping into a pit filled with snakes. Or perhaps I'm talking about camping out in the wild without any tents or even toilet paper. No, it's even scarier than that: we're flying as a family of four for the first time next week. As such, I wanted to buy the Enfamil single formulas packets that make 4 ounces at a time. While they are pricey, I like that each one is individually sealed for when we go through security at the airport. However, I sometimes have problems finding them. Either they're really popular and keep selling out, or they're just not well stocked by most stores. (Perhaps it's a combination of both.) Either way I headed to Babies 'R Us look for them, as well as a few other items that I want for our plane trip.
As I was perusing the formula shelf, I noticed a formula that I have heard of but never seen before: Earth's Best Organic Formula. They had it in both the regular and the soy version. Of course I was very intrigued by it and had to take a closer look. Basically it seemed very similar to the Similac Organic. So of course I had to check it out on-line (once I got home). I have to say that I really like their website. The have a positive and informative article from a doctor describing how to choose formula. The big advantage is that Earth's Best is an organic company. It's also Kosher if that's important to you. The only real downside I see is that it only comes in 13.2 ounce cans according to their website, and while all organic formulas are somewhat pricey, Earth's Best is a little bit more expensive. Their website sells it for $20.21 per can. However, you can save a couple bucks per can if you order a 6 pack of it. I looked up the price of Similac Organic on drugstore.com, and they are selling a 12.9 ounce can for $18.99. They and Similac.com are also offering a coupon for $5 off (and I've seen coupons in a bunch of magazines recently.) Ignoring the impact of bulk discounts and coupons, that puts Similac almost 6 cents less expensive per ounce. Availability could also be a concern, if you are like me and plan your next formula purchase when your scoop scrapes the bottom of your last container, as this store is the first place I've seen it. However, that could be just where I live. I have to say that while I've never used this formula, I've been really happy with the other Earth's Best products that we've used. If this were sold in a store that were closer to me and I wanted to use organic formula, I would seriously consider it.

For those of us who didn't get an instruction manual with our babies and for whom parenting hasn't always gone as planned. On a more serious note this blog is about supporting a woman's ability to make her own choices about parenting including the choice, for whatever reason, to bottle feed her babies formula.
Similac organic uses sucrose
(sugar) as it's sweetener and Earth's best uses lactose. I've heard that lactose is a better choice.
