Sharing Grandparents

My older son (OS) was very excited about his two grandpas visiting. By that I mean my mom and dad. We like to joke that OS is very progressive and only uses gender neutral terms. When he was about 18 months he referred to both my husband and me as "mommy". Anyhow, all week long he talked about how when the grandpas visited we would all go to Friendly's together. He even knew exactly what he would order: a hot dog with macaroni and cheese, apple juice and green chocolate chip ice cream (mint) with lots of cherries.

With all this anticipation, we were pretty surprised yesterday at Friendly's when our dinner arrived and OS barely touched it. He became very quiet. By the time the ice cream with lots of cherries arrived and OS ate only one bite, I knew something was really wrong. I thought maybe it was the medicine he's on for his cold. I asked him if his stomach hurt, but he said no. I asked him if felt okay and he said he did. Then it dawned on me that my mother had been holding my younger son (YS) for a large portion of the dinner. I asked OS if he was jealous. He said no. I asked him if he wanted YS to go in his stroller. He emphatically said yes. Then he went over and
sat in my mom's lap and ate ice cream. I guess I wrongfully assumed that if he were jealous he would act out like he typically does when he is upset. I was surprised to see the opposite behavior in that he became very quiet.
