For right or wrong, to me the word organic is synonomous with "pure" as in straight from nature. Fruit and veggies, yes. Formula, I hate to say it, but no. Because of this frame of mind, I was very surprised a few months ago when I saw that Similac had come out with an organic formula. Right away I thought "it's processed!" but that thought was quickly replaced with "well, actually it makes sense." For many parents, it's important that their kids eat organic. In fact the very first Blog Exchange that I read had a debate about organic vs. non-organic foods. For a variety of reasons, many people choose to use formula. Why shouldn't there be an organic formula out there? Regular formula had a milk protein base. It makes sense for there to be a line of formula in which that milk protein comes from organic milk.
I have a friend who works for Ross Abbott, maker of Similac. According to this friend, Organic Similiac Infant Formula came about because of huge consumer demand. Many of Similac's customers eat organic foods and want organic food for their formula fed infants. I was curious about the sales volume, but she didn't have any stats off hand. I do have to say, that while it is more expensive than regular Similac, it is only a couple dollars more per can.

We are avid organic food eaters. And we also use Organic formula for our son. It's actually the grocery store brand, which word for word has the same exact ingredients than the name brand and is much cheaper.
