Learning to Relax

Here's one of my favorite lessons that someone told me when my older son (OS) was a newborn: it's important for your kids to see you relaxing. When they see you curl up on the couch with a book or type away on your blog (I don't really know anyone who does that!), you're teaching them how to relax. You're modeling for them that it's good to take a little break. At the same time you're forcing them to work on their individual play. Yes, playing Candyland with them and other games that are right up there in excitement with watching paint dry are important, but so is teaching them how to entertain themselves. I happen to think I'm pretty creative when I play "cars" or "kitchen", but I am not nearly as creative as OS. In fact when he does play without my interference, I am amazed by the storylines that I overhear from the cozy comfort of my couch.

Ideally you're showing them that with a little break, your productivity can go way up or that some days are just days to unwind. Today was the latter. After an exhausting few nights where not just one, but both of my kids were up at various times during the night, combined with the fact that my parents who were both visiting us from out of town contracted the stomach flu and one threw up fish all over the inside door of my car, today was a day where we curled up on the couch and watched a lot of Clifford the Big Red Dog. Then the boys and I all took naps.

A. Elliot's Lesson Learned: It's important that your kids see you relaxing.
