Before we had kids, my husband and I would frequent the movies on a regular basis. If there was a movie that had gotten at least fairly decent reviews, then we would see it. In fact right before I gave birth to my older son (OS), we tried to squeeze in as many movies as we could because we knew that it might be a while before we went to the movies again. Turns out we were right. First of all, getting a babysitter is pretty expensive, although now I'm part of a babysitting co-op so at least that's no longer an issue. (I would explain more about the co-op, but that deserves its own post.) Although we are fairly good about getting babysitters, movies aren't exactly the best settings to catch up on what's been going on with each other so we tend toward more dates involving going out to a nice dinner.
Last year the moms club I'm in started a movie club. I volunteered to be the coordinator so that means I just have to go to all the movie club nights. So maybe I'm exaggerating just the teeniest amount when I say I have to go, but truth be told, I do tend to go to most of them. I really look forward to our monthly movie nights.
Tonight I went to an impromptu movie night with a couple of the women from the movie club. I was waiting in line at the candy line when I realized that the person ahead of me hadn't been to a movie in a very long time. How did I know this? Because she asked the teenager behind the counter to explain what every type of candy was. Then she asked questions about the different size popcorn containers, drink containers, and whether or not she could get a free cup of "fountain water". The teenager and I were both a little confused by that (although I don't think that the woman realized I was eavesdropping). By fountain water she meant tap water. Anyhow, she purchased a smorgasbord of food and drinks and left carrying everything on a special movie theater tray.
While I was pleased that she seemed to enjoy picking out her snacks so much, I just wish I had been in a different line because I missed the first couple of previews and hey, that's one of my favorite parts of the movie.
A. Elliot's Lesson Learned: Study up on your snacks before going to the theater.Labels: Humor (at least Attempted), Mom-Care |
Alex,
I certainly would not want to mock the person in front of you in line, but I will admit to being perplexed. I know a lot of movie theaters have added all kinds of elaborate food service, like hot dogs, sandwiches, cappuccino bars, and nachos, but most people I know find those things pretty easy to recognize. Other than doubling the size of the candy bags in order to justify quintupling the prices, I don't understand what major innovations in snacks would be so confusing to an adult movie-goer. Am I missing something, and if not, were there any lessons learned that you can share with the rest of us?
