The Ants Go Marching One by One

It’s been a week since I set up my older son’s (OS) ant farm. I’m pleased to report that much progress has been made. The ants have made two tunnels that span from the sides of the top, down the bottom of the ant farm and back up again. In fact one tunnel has a loop just like a roller coaster. However, as we speak, a private lab is comparing my DNA and the DNA of the ants to see if in fact we are related. I am quite suspicious of their attitude and work ethic. While they are obviously quite devoted to their work as evident by the two tunnels complete with advanced loop (they obviously get this from me, the work ethic not the advanced loop), they are not at all making their tunnels in the directions indicated by the instruction manual that came with the ant farm. Just to clarify, the ant farm came with a small blue stick whose sole purpose was to make starter tunnels for the ants. That’s right, I made 4 starter tunnels for the ants two of which were a half-inch and 2 of which were a full inch. Just like how you let a toddler decide between two choices, I had provided the ants with two types of starters tunnels in the event that they didn’t like one. Also just like a toddler, these two choices were meant to teach them how to make decisions and allow them to feel a sense of control over their lives. Those crafty ants decided on choice three-none of the choices. This alone convinces me that they are related to my kids. My golden retriever too. Oh yeah, and also my two cats. Thus they truly are marching (or digging) to the beat of their own drummer.
