Poop Catchers

As a new parent I was very intrigued by the concept of the disposable swim diaper. After all, these were a relatively new invention and not around when I was a kid or when I was babysitting. I thought it was a fabulous idea, because it would be both more convenient and make swimming pools more hygienic. I bought a package of them for my child's first summer. I had a distant memory of someone saying that they didn't hold in pee, but I figured she didn't know what she was talking about. After all, I was the informed parent who subscribed to two parenting magazines so surely I would know if such a thing were true. Yeah, right! I got my child dressed to go over to the neighbors' house for a quick swim in their pool. Well, Murphy's Law struck and my child fell asleep on the 15 second walk next door. I turned around and went back home and put him down in his crib. I debated changing him, but then I remembered I had these fantastic new swim diapers on him and after all a diaper is a diaper. Oh, how wrong I was! I swear it would have been better if he hadn't been wearing any diaper at all. He peed, and it leaked right out of the swim diaper. Unfortunately it did not leak all at once. It must have leaked out little by little every time he tossed and turned because when he woke up none of it was in the diaper: it was all over the crib. Seriously, if he hadn't been wearing a diaper, it would have probably just been in one large puddle that was absorbed into the sheet. So here's one of A. Elliot's lessons learned: swim diapers are poop catchers only. They're fabulous if your child poops while he or she is swimming, but they're not going to hold any pee. In other words, kids are still peeing where you swim.

A. Elliot's Lesson Learned: Swim diapers do not absorb pee.
